Guide 07 · Trial and cancellation
Know the exit before you start.
Evaluate live TV free-trial eligibility, authorization, conversion, cancellation timing, service end dates, and confirmation evidence before signup.
Direct answer
The shortest useful version
Before submitting signup, record eligibility, trial start and end, first paid amount and time, payment authorization, cancellation steps, when access ends after cancellation, and the confirmation method. If checkout does not clearly answer one field, treat it as unresolved and do not rely on the offer.
A free-trial headline does not establish that a particular account is eligible, how long access lasts, when a payment method may be authorized, or what happens if the subscription is canceled during the trial. Those answers can differ by provider, offer, account history, and signup surface.
Use the live checkout and subscriber terms to build an exact timeline before confirming an order. This guide records the process, not a universal promise that a trial is available.
- Free trial
- Never assumed
- Availability and duration may depend on account eligibility and the current offer.
- Cancel by
- Exact timestamp
- Calculate from the provider's displayed terms and retain the timezone.
- Completion proof
- Provider confirmation
- An app closure or card removal is not necessarily a cancellation record.
Decision path
Work from need to evidence.
Confirm eligibility on the live signup surface
Check whether the offer applies to the account, plan, location, and signup channel. Do not borrow eligibility from an advertisement or another person's account.
Write the conversion timeline
Record the trial start, stated duration, exact first-charge date and time when shown, amount after the trial, billing cadence, and timezone.
Read cancellation effects before paying
Determine the official cancellation path and whether access ends immediately, at trial cancellation, or at the end of a paid period. Look for refund limitations.
Set two reminders
Place an evaluation reminder early enough to test the service and a second reminder before the provider's stated conversion deadline. Reminders support the terms; they do not change them.
Save non-sensitive evidence
Keep the order summary, terms version or URL, confirmation number, and cancellation confirmation. Do not store passwords, full payment details, or recovery codes.
Verify the final account state
After cancellation, confirm the provider shows the subscription status and service-end date you expected. Escalate discrepancies through official support.
Working sheet
Trial-to-exit timeline
Complete this from the account's own checkout. Marketing copy alone is not enough.
| Timeline field | Controlling evidence | Value to record |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Live account checkout | Eligible or not eligible, plan, and observation time |
| Trial window | Order summary and trial terms | Start, end, timezone, and stated duration |
| First paid renewal | Checkout disclosure | Date, time, amount, and cadence |
| Cancellation effect | Current cancellation help and terms | Access-end timing and refund rule |
| Completion | Provider account and confirmation | Status, confirmation reference, and service-end date |
Offer language and account eligibility are different evidence
A public page can describe a trial while the live account checkout determines whether the user qualifies. Prior service, plan selection, bundle status, location, or the route used to subscribe may affect the result. Record what the authenticated checkout actually offers without exposing account details.
If no eligible trial appears, do not treat a search result, old screenshot, or third-party article as authority to expect one.
Cancellation timing can change the testing plan
Some services may preserve access after cancellation while others may end trial access under different rules. That difference determines whether it is safe to cancel immediately after signup or whether the household needs a reminder closer to conversion.
Read the provider's current rule before choosing a strategy. The exact account confirmation after cancellation is the strongest evidence that the request completed.
Use the trial to test decision-critical behavior
Prioritize local lineup, one must-have live event, peak simultaneous viewing, DVR behavior, and the devices that will actually be used. A broad tour of the interface is less valuable than testing the reasons the household might keep or reject the service.
- Run local checks from the service location.
- Test both home and intended away viewing where the terms permit it.
- Record unresolved behavior before the conversion deadline.
- Cancel through the provider's documented path and retain confirmation.
